Rajasthani Music & Dance
Straight from the colourful desert of western Rajasthan, traditional folk musicians perform vocal compositions of the great Sufi poets (such as Bulesha and Shah Latif) accompanied on the beautiful sarangi and kamaicha (bowed instrument) a variety of vibrant percussion and also by a stunning kalbelia dancer.
Kalbelia is a vigorous dance form where movements and costumes bear resemblance to that of the serpents. They sway sensually to loud chants and sounds of the flute, which increases in tempo and vigor with the increase in beat. This dance is only performed by women of the Kalbelia community. The main occupation of the community is catching snakes and trading the venom.
The Dancers, the dance and the costumes(traditional black swirling skirts with silver embroidery) have made Rajasthan one of the most colourful regions of the world. An other unique instrument is the Khartal(castanets) but unlike its Spanish cousin this type is comprised of two similar shaped wooden pieces and is approx. eight inches long and 2 inches wide. It is played by the same hand swirling faster as the tempo increases.
